Charles Edward Humphreys was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on the Indian Unattached List on 17 June 1917 and shortly afterwards was assigned to the 74th Punjabis. The regiment was serving as part of the Jubbulpore Brigade, 5th (Mhow) Division. In August 1917 the 74th Punjabis were transferred to the 4th (Rawalpindi Brigade, 2nd (Rawalpindi) Division. On 25 December 1917 Humphreys was transferred to the 1/69th Punjabis who were serving in Aden at the time. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 18 June 1918. The 1/69th Punjabis left Aden for India in April 1919 and were soon in action on the N.W. Frontier. With copied m.i.c. and gazette extracts.
