George/Hori Taipiha attested into the New Zealand Forces on 11 April 1917. A member of the Maori Contingent’s 20th Reinforcements, he left New Zealand for Europe on 27 July 1917, arriving in England on 21 September and in France on 16 December 1917 where he posted to the 4th Reserve Battalion Canadian Railway Troops (Pioneers). Taipiha was posted to the 22nd Company N.Z. Rifle Corps on 24 March 1918 but was admitted to a Field Ambulance suffering with bronchitis on 30 March. He was admitted to No. 2 N.Z. General Hospital in England on 10 April and embarked for return to New Zealand on 3 May 1918, being demobilised on 28 April 1920. During the Second World War he registered for active service on 26 March 1940 but was classified as fit for home service only. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a Sergeant with the ‘Harewood Aerodrome Defence Unit, 2 June 1942-16 November 1944. Taipiha died in 1965.

With two metal ‘NZNC’ shoulder titles; another metal badge inscribed in raised letters, ‘Te Hoko Whitu A Tu. N.Z,’; with copied service papers.
