Thomas William Burn was born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal. A Compositor by occupation, he attested for the 7th Citizen Battery, Natal Field Artillery, on 18 August 1914. After serving in German South West Africa he was discharged on 13 August 1915. Burn then attested for the 11th South African Infantry on 14 January 1916. Serving in East Africa, he went down with Malaria, resulting in his return to South Africa and discharge on 17 February 1917. Burn re-enlisted into the 1st South African Infantry Brigade on 15 June 1918. Entering France in December 1918 he was posted to the 4th South African Infantry. Returning to South Africa in June 1919, he was finally discharged on 10 July 1919. With copied service papers.
