Thomas Bousfield was born in Kirkby Stephen, Westmoreland, England. A Sailor by occupation and a former (bought out) member of the Royal Navy, he attested for service abroad with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force at Sydney, N.S.W., on 16 August 1914. He served with the Expeditionary Force and was discharged as ‘time expired on 18 January 1915. He re-attested for service abroad with the Australian Imperial Force at Liverpool, N.S.W. on 5 May 1915 and was posted to the 1st Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps. Sailing from Australia, he joined the 2nd Battalion A.I.F. on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 4 November 1915. From there he landed in Egypt on 28 December 1915. With the 1st Field Ambulance, A.A.M.C., he then landed in France, 28 March 1916. He was treated for an illness in England, May-August 1917 and took leave in England, October-November 1918, before finally leaving France for England in February 1919. Sailing then for Australia, he arrived in June 1919 and was discharged at Sydney on 26 July 1919. With copied service papers.
