James McAhan was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. A Carpenter by occupation and a former member of the Otago Rifles, he attested for overseas service with the Australian Imperial Forces at Townsville, Queensland, on 18 August 1914. Posted to the 9th Battalion A.I.F. he landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He was killed in action at Gaba Tepe on 20 May 1915. Private McAhan was buried in Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli. With copied service papers.
