James Pearce was born in Port Adelaide, South Australia. A Driver by occupation, he attested for service abroad with the Australian Imperial Force on 20 October 1914, aged 24 years. With the 9th Light Horse he landed in Gallipoli on 16 May 1915. He was wounded in action on 7 July 1915, being hit by shrapnel in the right forearm, resulting in him being invalided to Malta and thence to England and then back to Australia. There on 18 December 1915 he was admitted to the 7th Australian General Hospital, Keswick. Pearce was finally discharged from the Army on 24 July 1916 and was granted a pension. With copied service papers.
