Herbert Charles Baker was born in Cranbrook, Kent, in 1892. He enlisted into the East Kent Regiment at Headcorn, Kent, on 11 January 1911 but was later transferred to the 21st Lancers. With the 21st Lancers he entered the N.W. Frontier of India theatre of war on 29 August 1915. He served as a Hospital Orderly, July 1917-1919 and also served for some time with the ‘Garrison Mounted Police’. He was transferred to the Army Reserve Class B on 4 June 1921 and was discharged on 10 January 1923. In 1939 he wrote to the War Office to claim for the 1914-15 Star and India General Service Medal. His claim for the former was upheld and the star was issued to him for his claim for the I.G.S. was not upheld.

Sold with recipient’s Soldiers’ Small Book; Discharge Certificate; Character Certificate (2); Certificate of Employment During the War; War Office card and letter relating to the late award of the 1914-15 Star, dated 1939; together with copied m.i.c. and other research.
