After service with the S.A.E.C. - Wireless Section, Lindsay attested for the 1st South African Rifles on 10 August 1915 and was promoted to Serjeant on 17 December 1916. Serving in East Africa with his regiment, he was killed in action on 20 August 1917, aged 24 years. He was buried in the Iringa Cemetery, Tanganyika. With modern photograph of headstone and copied service papers.
