Robert Anderson was born in the Parish of Cathcart, Glasgow. An Engineer by occupation and a member of the 3rd V.B. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, attested for the 6th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Territorial Force) on 29 May 1908, aged 21 years. As a Serjeant in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 1 May 1915. Later in the same month he was slightly wounded in the leg. In June he was invalided to England and thence Scotland suffering from rheumatism and was discharged on 11 December 1916. With copied service papers and m.i.c.
