Bert Edward Edwards was born in Ilford, Essex, in 1887. A Seaman by occupation, he attested for the 25th Battalion Royal Fusiliers on 16 March 1915, aged 28 years. With the battalion he served in East Africa, 10 April 1915-24 January 1916. He was invalided back to England and was discharged due to illness on 14 April 1916 and was awarded the Silver War Badge. Despite his illness, Edwards was able to return to his former employment as a Merchant Seaman. With copied service papers, m.i.c. and roll extracts.
