Benjamin Vallis [sic] was born in Paddington, London, and attested for the 9th Lancers at Maidstone, in November 1845. He served with the Regiment during the Punjab Campaign, 1848-49 (entitled medal with ‘Chillianwala’ and ‘Goojerat’ clasps), and throughout the Indian Mutiny during which according to his service papers he was twice wounded ‘14 September 1857’ and ‘14 December 1857’ and also additionally entitled to the ‘Relief of Lucknow’ clasp. The latter is at variance with both the latest published transcriptions of the medal roll and casualty roll, the former gives his entitlement as the medal appears, and both record him as being wounded at Delhi 14 September 1857. The medal roll gives him as being ‘disabled by wound... Rejoined 4 January 1858.’

Vallis was discharged 7 December 1869, having served 24 years and 29 days with the Colours (awarded L.S. & G.C.)
