Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (3428 D... Mjr. J. Phillips H.M’s 54th. R...) a slightly later issue struck on a thinner flan; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (3428. Drum Maj: J. Phillips, 54th. Foot) heavy contact marks, therefore good fine, the LS&GC better (2) £260-320

James Phillips was born in 1840 in Strabairn, Co. Tyrone, and attested for the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot at Glasgow on 5 December 1854. Appointed a Drummer on 15 November 1855, he served as a Drummer during the Indian Mutiny, and was promoted Corporal on 22 August 1866; Sergeant on 25 March 1868; and was appointed Drum Major on 18 July 1868. Awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 5 December 1877, he was discharged on 23 December 1879, after 20 years and 303 days’ service, of which 16 years and 9 months were spent in India.
