Matthew Kaily was born on 19 December 1839 at Murroe, Co. Limerick, Ireland, and attested for the 55th (Westmoreland) Regiment of Foot at Limerick on 19 December 1854. Appointed a Drummer on 1 August 1856, he was promoted to Corporal on 26 March 1869, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, with a Gratuity of £5, on 28 November 1876. He was discharged on 1 October 1878 after 20 years and 287 days’ service, of which 10 years and two months were spent in India. He was admitted as an in-pensioner of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, on 1 April 1905, and died there on 22 April 1907. He is buried in the Royal Hospital Old Plot, Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey.
