Philip Butler was born on 29 October 1837 in Liverpool and attested for the 33rd (Duke of Wellington’s) Regiment of Foot at Edinburgh on 29 October 1851. Promoted Corporal on 9 February 1863, he was appointed Drum-Major on 28 March of that year, and served with the Regiment in Abyssinia 1867-68 (entitled to Medal). He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a Gratuity of £5, on 29 October 1876, and was discharged on 16 January 1877, after 21 years and 80 days’ service.
