Albert Keene was born in Shoreditch, Middlesex in April 1859 and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Rochester, Kent, on 4 March 1874. Posted to the 3rd Battalion and appointed a Bugler on 18 November that year, he was promoted Corporal on 9 October 1885 and to Sergeant Bugler on 24 June 1886. He was discharged on 31 March 1896, after 22 years and 29 days’ service, including postings to Egypt, India, and South Africa, but his sole medal entitlement was his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, which he received in 1894.
