Monk, Welsh Regt.); Army Meritorious Service Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue (Bandmaster J. W. Monk, Welsh R.), the first three with minor contact marks and a little polished, otherwise very fine, the last rather better (4) £340-380

John William Monk was born in Templemore, Tipperary 1865 and enlisted in the Royal Artillery as a boy recruit in October 1880. Appointed a Bandsman in July 1882, he subsequently studied at Kneller Hall for a Bandmastership and, on qualifying in March 1895, was appointed Bandmaster of the 1st Battalion, Welsh Regiment. He remained similarly employed until his retirement in August 1909 and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in AO 68 of 1903 and the Meritorious Service Medal in AO 227 of 1941. Monk died in Portsmouth in June 1954; sold with copied research, including medal roll confirmation for his Boer War awards.
