Alfred Gain was born in Valetta, Malta in July 1859 and enlisted in the Welsh Regiment in December 1881. Advanced to Corporal in January 1886 and to Orderly Room Sergeant in June 1887, he was present in the Sudan operations of 1888, including the action at Gemaizah (Medal & clasp; Khedive’s Star).

He was subsequently actively employed during the Boer War, when he was present at the relief of Kimberley and took part in the operations in the Orange Free Colony, February to March 1900, including those at Paardeberg (17-26 February) and the actions at Polar Grove, Driefontein, Vet River (5-6 May) and Zand River; as well as operations in the Transvaal, May-June 1900, including the actions at Johannesburg, Pretoria and Diamond Hill (11-12 June), and likewise, east of Pretoria, July-November 1900, including the action at Belfast (26-27 August). Having then been commissioned as a Q.M. & Hon. Lieutenant in March 1901, he served again in the Transvaal, November 1901 to May 1902 (Queen’s Medal & 6 clasps; King’s Medal & 2 clasps).

Having then been advanced to Q.M. & Hon. Captain in March 1911, the same year in which he received the Coronation Medal as a member of the 3rd Battalion, Gain was placed on the Retired List in April 1913. Recalled in the Great War, he served on the Home Establishment as a Quarter-Master on embarkation duties at Southampton H.Q. in 1914 and afterwards as an Assistant Commandant. He was advanced to Q.M. & Hon. Major in July 1917; sold with copied research.
