A superb ‘Flying Victory’ Defence of Jellalabad group of four awarded to Corporal William Tuckett, 13th Prince Albert’s (Somerset) Light Infantry

Ghuznee 1839 (Pt. William Tuckett XIII P.A.L.I.) naming regimentally impressed on edge and fitted with German silver straight bar suspension; Cabul 1842 (Pt. Wm. Tuckett 13th P-A-L-I-) surname and regimental details re-engraved, the rest regimentally impressed, fitted with steel clip and bar suspension; Defence of Jellalabad 1842, Flying Victory (Wm Tuckett 13th Regt.) officially impressed naming, fitted with German silver straight bar suspension; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., large letter reverse (Corpl. Wm. Tuckett, 13th Lt. Infy.) edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine or better (4) £1400-1800

William Tuckett is confirmed in the list of the 13th L.I. entitled to exchange Jellalabad medals, and also in the list of 28 men for whom ‘new’ Jellalabad were forwarded in lieu of those received from the War Office (10 April 1852).

William Tuckett was born in Valenciennes, France, in 1814, and enlisted as a Boy at Berhampore on 12 October 1826, becoming Private (Bandsman) on attaining the age of 18, on 11 April 1832. He fought throughout the war in Afghanistan and was present at Ghuznee, Cabul and Jellalabad. He returned to England in July 1845, was promoted to Corporal in October 1852, and discharged on 25 October 1853, to serve on the Staff of the 2nd Kings Own Staffordshire Militia.
