Joshua Rowland Brookes was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Marine Artillery on 28 June 1849 and promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 11 July 1856. He served with the Baltic expedition in 1854, and with the R.M. Battalion at the attack and surrender of the forts of Bomarsund (Medal). In 1855 he was present with the combined force before Sebastopol during the siege, until May, when he accompanied the expedition to Kertch, and served with the R.M. Artillery in the gun-boats during the occupation of the Sea of Azoff, including the attack on and destruction of Government stores, &c., at Taganrog, on 3rd June; at Marioupol on 5th June, and at Gheisk on 6th June (officially mentioned). He commanded a mortar in a flotilla employed against Sebastopol on several occasion, from 15th of August until the capture of that place (honourably mentioned); served as a Captain of Artillery with the Turkish Contingent, from March 1856 until disbanded, and was Garrison-Adjutant to the Artillery at Kertch (Crimean Medal with two Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honour, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Lieutenant Brookes retired on half pay 21 August 1860, and, in July 1862 was appointed Superintendent of the Middlesex Industrial School.
