John McGonigle was born in the parish of Abbey, near Paisley in 1876 and enlisted into the Scots Guards in March 1895, aged 19 years. He served with this regiment during the Boer War, subsequently being transferred to the Reserve in April 1907. He reenlisted with the colours on the outbreak of the Great War and served in France and Flanders with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders from 11 November 1914.
