The Crown of Thorns, acquired by Louis IX from the Latin emperor Baldwin II of Constantinople, was brought to Paris in 1239. Louis commissioned the Sainte-Chapelle, in the Palais de Justice on the Île de la Cité in the centre of Paris, to house it; the edifice was begun in 1246 and consecrated in 1248
