De Dion-Bouton, founded in Paris in 1883 by Count Albert De Dion and Georges Bouton, became synonymous with the development of the early automobile in France, along with Panhard et Levassor and Mors. The company originally developed a steam boiler for the French navy, transforming their technology into steam-powered tricycles (one of which had reached 60kph in 1887) and ultimately steam-powered cars, an example being the fastest performer in the world’s very first motor race, the Paris-Rouen event of 1894. The company, whose headquarters were at Puteaux, north-west of Paris, ceased trading in 1933
