A similar coin reading nipan of the moneyer Æthelstan, now in the BritishMuseum, was in the Elmore Jones collection (586-£780). Dolley discussed this coin at length (BNJ 1955, pp.92-99) and offered Newport (Monmouthshire) and Newport (Shropshire) as possible mints. The former is more plausible as the coin is of Dolley and Talvio’s ‘Southern A’ style, not known north of Warwick (cf. BNJ Dolley & Talvio, BNJ 1977, p.56, no. 154)
