D.C.M. London Gazette 5 December 1918.

The following slightly more detailed recommendation than that published in the
London Gazette, is extracted from the hand painted card included with the lot: ‘For bravery and initiative as Scout Sergeant during operations East of Colincamps from 14th to 18th August 1918.

On the 14th inst., as soon as information was received that the enemy was withdrawing, this N.C.O. led out a reconnoitring patrol about 2,500 yds. in advance of our line to just West of Serre and brought back invaluable information as to the enemy’s movements. Later he was employed particularly to get touch with troops on the flanks where others were unable to do so. This he succeeded in doing on every occasion and his information was invariably accurate and most valuable. His work entailed his moving about in the most exposed positions, over difficult country not previously reconnoitered and he was subjected to heavy m.g. fire and accurate sniping throughout.’
