Eight officers and 247 other ranks of the 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, were present at Abu Klea.

Captain Rhys William Wykeham Jones was born on 27 April 1863. He was commissioned into the 1st Battalion, Royal Susex Regiment on 10 March 1883, served in the Sudan campaign and was present with this battalion at the Battle of Abu Klea and action at El Gubat. Promoted to Captain, 13 April 1892, serving with the 2nd Battalion of the same regiment; transferred to the 3rd Battalion, Border Regiment, 26 October 1892; seconded to the Remount Establishment, 18 June 1901. Sold with confirmation and a copy of a regimental group photograph including the recipient wearing his medal.
