John Francis Bill was born at Sketty, Swansea, on 11 May 1881, and gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the South Wales Borderers on 20 January 1900. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa from October 1900 to April 1901, and from August 1901 to October 1903, after which he served in West Africa attached to the Sierra Leone Battalion until October 1904, becoming Captain on 5 July 1908. He was killed in action in France on 29 March 1915 and is buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery at Souchez.
