D.S.O. London Gazette 22 June, 1918: Temporary Major (Acting Lieut. Colonel) Paul Whetham, Manchester Regiment, “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His battalion was continuously in action for four days during an enemy advance, and was successful in repulsing all the enemy’s attacks. On two occasions his promptness and skill in organizing and leading counter attacks resulted in the line being restored. His courageous example and cheerful bearing under most difficult conditions not only maintained but increased the fighting spirit of his men.”
Paul Whetham was born 21 February, 1877, and joined the 4th (Militia) battalion, Royal Fusiliers, as Lieutenant in December 1896; Second Lieutenant (from Militia) Queen’s R.W. Surrey Regt., 1 December, 1897; Lieutenant, 1899; Captain, 1903; resigned commission, 1910; Major, 21st (6th City) battalion, Manchester Regiment, 7 January, 1915; Temp. Lieut. Colonel whilst in command 22nd (7th City) battalion, Manchester Regiment.
