D.C.M. London Gazette 16 August, 1917.
“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed great gallantry and skill in carrying out a difficult task during an attack, clearing out-buildings and advancing into a wood, in which he killed and captured large numbers of the enemy. He established communications with the battalion on his right and consolidated his position.”
The history of the 6th London gives the action as the assault on the White Chateau during the battle of Messines. The Chateau having been effectively isolated, the assault on the out-buildings was undertaken. Behind an effective barrage the attacking platoons advanced, clearing the first set of stables, and making good use of their Lewis guns, when the barrage lifted, rapidly gained and surrounded the second set of stables and an adjacent wood, and there captured two German Officers and sixty-one Other Ranks.
Sergeant Roberts was later commissioned into the Tank Corps on 2 February, 1919.
