I.D.S.M. (Immediate), London Gazette, 18 July, 1941. Awarded for gallantry during the campaign in Eritrea 1941: 'For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in the action outside the BARENTU Road on 23d. Jan. 1941, this N.C.O. at a critical period when his platoon was under heavy enemy machine gun fire, this N.C.O. with the number one of his section ran forward two hundred yards under intense enemy fire, and engaged the enemy. As a result of this very daring action the platoon was able to secure its objective, purring the enemy to flight.
