I.D.S.M., London Gazette, 21 October 1941. Awarded for gallantry at Cherin, Eritrea, on 15 March 1941: 'For conspicuous bravery and initiative under fire. While the survivors of the two leading companies were attempting to establish themselves on the objective which was still strongly held by the enemy, this N.C.O., seeing a party of the enemy in a post to his front, advanced single handed and went in with the bayonet under heavy fire, and though wounded, put the enemy to flight. This act in no small degree assisted the remainder to capture their objective.'
