George Barrett was born in Hackney, Middlesex, on 10 November 1859. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD on 11 January 1876, and then drafted to BOSCAWEN (1876-77), where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class in July 1877. He subsequently served aboard MINOTAUR (1877-79), TEMERAIRE (15 December 1880 to 14 April 1884), where he was advanced to Able Seaman in March 1881. During service in the latter vessel he was present at the bombardment of Alexandria in July 1882 and was landed for the subsequent land actions leading up to the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir. His last ship was HECTOR (1884-86), from which he was discharged to shore on expiry of his first ten year engagement on 9 November 1887. He did not receive the L.S. & G.C. medal.
