George Craven was born in Gosport, Hampshire, on 11 March 1852. He joined the service as an Acting Engine Room Artificer aboard H.M.S. PEMBROKE on 9 June 1876, subsequently serving aboard ALEXANDRA (1877-80) where he was advanced to E.R.A. on 1 July 1877, MINOTAUR (21 August 1880 to 2 August 1884). He joined TRIUMPH (1885-88) where he was advanced to Chief E.R.A. on 9 June 1886 and received his L.S. & G.C. medal whilst aboard on 29 June 1888, and then finally to PENELOPE (1891-94). He was Pensioned to shore on 14 June 1896.
