William Evens was born in East Stonehouse, Devon, on 28 December 1859. He entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 1 May 1876, and advanced to Boy 1st Class in May 1877 and Ord 2nd Class during December 1877. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships INVINCIBLE (1878-82), where he was advanced to Ord in December 1878 and to A.B. during October 1879, DRYAD (1883-84) earning his Egypt award, and advanced to Leading Seaman in October 1884, KINGFISHER (1884-88) where he was made a P.O. 2nd Class (2nd Captain of the Forecastle), CAMBRIDGE (1889-91) receiving advancement to P.O. 1st Class. Whilst aboard H.M.S. ARCHER (1892-93) he was promoted to Acting Boatswain R.N. on 14 June 1893, and was appointed to H.M.S. NORTHAMPTON on 14 June 1894, but died from erysipelas on 28 March 1897.
