Richard Ferris was born in Plymouth on 28 June 1858. First entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPLACABLE on 12 August 1873, advanced to Boy 1st Class during July 1874. He was then drafted to H.M.S. VALOROUS (1875-78) where he was advanced to Ord in June 1876, and to A.B. on 1 July 1878 aboard H.M.S. HYDRA. Whilst serving in ROYAL ADELAIDE (1878-82) he received advancement to Leading Seaman during June 1880 and to P.O. 2nd Class (2nd Captain of Fore Top) in September 1880. For the Egypt campaign he was aboard H.M.S. ACHILLES (1880-82) and in his next vessel BRITON was advanced to P.O. 1st Class on 1 May 1884. Invalided from H.M.S. CAMBRIDGE and the service on 8 May 1885.
