Warrant Officer Etherington was originally a member of the 1st Battalion and joined the 2nd Battalion in 1934. He qualified as a boxing instructor at A.S.P.T., Aldershot, on 27 June 1934. The 2nd Battalion served in Palestine, fought in France with the B.E.F. and were evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940. They subsequently landed in Normandy on 6 June 1944.
