Marine Harry Leggard was killed on 9 June 1941, whilst borne on the books of H.M.S. President III and serving aboard S.S. Silver Palm. This motorship had left Calcutta on 17 April, and Freetown on 31 May, bound for Glasgow. Nothing more was heard until 17 July 1941, when a ship’s boat was found about 500 miles west of the Hebrides containing eight bodies. Papers found on thebodies confirmed they were from the Silver Palm. She carried a crew of 54, including 11 gunners and 3 passengers.
