D/JX 134276 Charles Edward Dyer died on 31 May 1940, aged 24, and is buried in Dover (St James’s) Cemetery, Kent. Able Seaman Dyer was serving aboard the sloop H.M.S. Bideford, during the evacuation from Dunkirk. On 30 May 1940, off Bray Beach, having taken on board more than 400 men, she was hit by a bomb on the quarter deck which blew away 40 feet of her stern, killing 25 and wounding a further 50. In a helpless state she was towed across the Channel for 36 hours by H.M. Gunboat Locust, and finally brought safely to the submarine camber in Dover Harbour, where the dead and wounded were taken off.
