M.M. London Gazette 2 November 1917. The following citation is taken from the Salford Pals History: ‘For gallant conduct during a raid. He rushed through the enemy wire calling his comrades to follow him and setting a very good example.’ Awarded for the attack on Les Trenchées at Honnecourt by 4 officers and 85 OR’s of “X” & “W” companies of the 20th Battalion. Four M.M’s were awarded for this action.
