Thomas Fairclough came from Oldham and enlisted at Bury in September 1914. He served with the 11th Battalion in France from September 1915 until he was demobilised in 1919. He emigrated to South Africa and in 1940 enlisted in the Union Defence Force at Beaconsfield. He served in the Cape Corps with the East African Expeditionary Force in the Sudan, Abyssinia and Eritrea during 1940-42, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2.
