John Cuthbert Shepherd was born in 1896 in Ashton-on-Ribble, and educated at Stoneyhurst, where he was a cadet in the O.T.C., leaving school in July 1914. He joined the 4th Battalion on 21 April 1915, and transferred to the 10th Battalion in France in 1916. He served in the battles of the Somme, Arras, and Ypres in 1917, and was killed leading his platoon on the 25th August 1918, during the advance on Martinpuich. He is buried in Adanac Military Cemetery at Miraumont.
