Othello Howarth was born in Cornholme, Yorkshire, and enlisted in Todmorden for the 1/6th battalion. He was wounded in the hand at Gallipoli on 1 June 1915, and killed in action on 6 September 1917, at Frazenburg Ridge. He is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. His brother 8829 Private Hubert Howarth served in the same battalion and was wounded in the leg in the same attack. He wrote to his parents: “I am sorry to say that Othello was killed the same day as I was wounded. He went over with the rest of us, and those who came back alive have a lot to be thankful for. It was madness. Anybody who went through it is not afraid of hell.”
