The following details are taken from the
Rochdale Observer 7 June 1916: ‘Private John Rigby, of the 1/6th (Rochdale) Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers, whose home is at 45 Crawford-street, Rochdale, has been awarded the Military Medal. He joined the local Territorials on September 2nd, 1914, and gained distinction during the severe fighting at Gallipoli, being mentioned in Sir Ian Hamilton’s dispatch of December 11th last year. Private Rigby, who is 34 years of age and a single man, was wounded in the left shoulder at Gallipoli on May 6th, 1915, and he has since undergone several operations.’
