William Andrew Barber was born in Deptford, Kent, and enlisted at New Cross. Soldiers Died states that he was killed in action on 3 November 1914. However, the Lancashire Fusiliers Annual 1914-15 indicates that he was killed between 26-27th August 1914, one of the first killed in the Retreat from Mons. His was one of eight identity discs forwarded by the Embassy of the United States of America, London, on 3 November 1914, which “were sent to the Ambassador at Berlin by Major General von Loebell, commandant of the Camp for prisoners of war at Doeberitz, who received them from a British sergeant there. I am informed that they were taken from British soldiers who fell at Antwerp”.
