James Donohoe was born in Dublin and enlisted for the Royal Dublin Fusiliers at Naas on 30 October 1891, aged 18. He was a musician by trade and consequently served for a while as a Bandsman. After service in the East Indies and South Africa, he was transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1899 but recalled for service in South Africa from November 1899 to November 1901. He was discharged medically unfit on 21 May 1902.
