John Gordon Petrie was born at Elgin, Scotland, on 16 October 1822. He was educated at Elgin Academy, Aberdeen University, and was a Cadet at Addiscombe, 1840-41. He entered the Bombay Artillery as a Second Lieutenant on 11 June 1841, and arrived in India in September 1841. He served during the campaign in the Scinde, January to March 1843, was present at the battles of Meeanee and Hyderabad, and subsequently took part in the expedition against Amir Shere Mahomed in June 1843. He served as Adjutant and Quartermaster of the Artillery in the Scinde in 1844; as Brigade Major, Artillery, with the Indus Field Force, 1846; and as Adjutant and Quartermaster, 1st Battalion, Bombay Artillery, 1848-53.

Petrie served during the Indian Mutiny, and was present at the attack on Ahwa, the siege of Kotah and the battle of Bunass. For his services he was mentioned in despatches and made Brevet Major
London Gazette 11 June 1858 and 31 January 1859. He was made Lieutenant-Colonel on 18 February 1861, and appointed to the command of the Golundauze Battalion, 1862-64, and to the command of the 21st Brigade in the latter year. He commanded the Artillery during the Abyssinian campaign of 1867-68, and was present at the action of Arogee and the capture of Magdala, being mentioned in despatches London Gazette 31 June 1868, and made a Companion of the Bath London Gazette 14 August 1868. He commanded the 21st Brigade until February 1872, when he was appointed Colonel on the Staff, commanding Royal Artillery, Southern District, at Portsmouth, an appointment he held until April 1877. In September 1876, Petrie received a reward for distinguished and meritorious service. He retired in December 1878 with the honorary rank of Lieutenant-General, and died at Southampton on 31 December 1890.
