M.C. London Gazette 30 July 1919 ‘For conspicuous gallantry and able leadership at Gheleuwe on 30 September 1918. When his company in the attack was held up by very severe machine gun fire he most skilfully continued to get his platoon forward to a position 400 yards in advance of the remainder of the line, thus enabling the company to move forward and capture the position. His fine leadership and gallant behaviour were responsible for the success of the operation.’

Second Lieutenant C.R.M.D. Fitz-Simon, M.C. was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion, Leinster Regiment on 21 December 1917. He served during the Great War in France and Belgium from 13 April 1918 to 1 October 1918, and was wounded. He later served in Palestine with the King’s Own Royal (Lancaster) Regiment, and in 1941 held the rank of Temporary Lieutenant Colonel with the same regiment.
