William Carter was born in the Parish of Chiselden, near Swindon, Wiltshire, and enlisted into the Grenadier Guards on 12 November 1844, aged 22 years. He was wounded at the Alma by a musket ball which passed through his right leg, disabling him for life. He was discharged in August 1856, was admitted to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, as an In-Patient in May 1889, and died on 23 April 1897.
