Arunachalam enlisted into the Indian Army on 10 March 1868. Serving in the Queen’s Own Sappers & Miners he was appointed a Jemadar in December 1885; Subadar in January 1891 and Subadar-Major in July 1893. He was awarded the O.B.I. 2nd Class on 13 August 1897.
