Wellesley St. George Ashe was born in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland on 24 February 1881. He was a Lieutenant in the Dublin City Royal Garrison Militia before sailing to South Africa and serving as a Lieutenant in the Imperial Yeomanry. After the war he moved to India, becoming a Planter in Assam. As a Corporal in the Assam Valley Light Horse he took part in Abor Expedition, 1911-12. Ashe was commissioned in the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on 4 December 1914. He was transferred to the Indian Cavalry Corps France in 1915 and resigned in 22 November 1917.
