Robert Boyd was born in Scone, near Perth, Scotland. A Clerk by occupation and a member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion Royal Highlanders, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Cupar on 26 February 1901, aged 20 years. He served with the 20th Company, 6th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry (Fife & Forfar Light Horse) in South Africa, March 1901-August 1902. He was discharged at Aldershot, having completed his engagement, on 11 August 1902. With a copied photograph of the recipient and copied service papers and roll extracts.
